Citizens for a Non-Voting Michigan

Monday, January 15th, 2007

A group, calling itself Citizens for Michigan, wants to change the state’s
constitution. But the group is made up of career politicians, lobbyists,
political insiders and miscellaneous self-important big-shots.

Sure, they’re citizens, too. But they’re a little different than your
average Michigander. You can tell by the changes they advocate. All have one
thing in common: stopping Michigan citizens from voting . . . on anything .

This phony citizens’ group wants an end the voters’ ability to petition to
place reforms directly before their fellow voters. Instead, Citizens for a
Snobby Michigan wants any such reforms to worm through the legislature first
.. . . so politicians can block measures before they get to the voters.

They also want to stop voters from electing judges and members of the State
Board of Education, along with other presently elected positions in higher
education. Let the governor appoint them, instead.

And they don’t want lawmakers to have to vote on pay raises, just pocket
them, sans vote. Oh, and they want to make it tougher for citizens to recall
elected officials.

Also on the group’s hit list? Term limits. Well, at least to weaken the
limits as much as possible, if an all-out repeal ain’t possible.

As Kurt O’Keefe, a Detroit attorney and grassroots activist, summed it up,
“It’s an elitist thing.”

When Michigan voters wreck this power-mad scheme, then these pompous tyrant
wannabees will despise their fellow Michigan citizens even more than they do
now.

This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.
