Post Offended
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007I’ve been offended. By the Washington Post.
Post reporter N.C. Aizenman wrote an article about Louisiana’s newly elected governor, Bobby Jindal, and Jindal’s Indian-American heritage. And, just so there’s no confusion: Jindal’s ancestors hail from the country of India; they weren’t misnamed by lost Europeans.
Since Jindal just became the first Indian-American governor in U.S. history, one might expect the article to celebrate this.
But, no.
Right off the bat we’re told that “plenty of Indian Americans recoil at Jindal’s socially conservative views.†Gee whiz, you mean all Indian Americans don’t think alike?
Readers then learn that some Indian Americans are “gnawed by a sense that†Jindal “distanced himself from his heritage during the campaign.†The evidence that Jindal sold out? As a toddler — yes, a toddler — Jindal chose the nickname “Bobby.†Then, in high school, he converted to Christianity.
What’s really the problem? For the Post, I bet, the most annoying thing about Jindal is that he’s a Republican. Lots of
Democrats have this funny idea that they own the allegiance of Americans who belong to identifiable non-white minority groups.
Americans of any hyphenation are free.
Jindal’s victory was not about race. It was about fighting corruption, which transcends race, color, creed.
This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.
