Think Freely Media presents Common Sense with Paul Jacob

The Stamps of Disapproval

President Obama is catching flak from pro-capitalist quarters for explaining to businessmen proud of building a business that “you didn’t build that.”Free Food!

Another sign of federal contempt for the work-for-a-living ethic has received less attention, but is just as revealing. It takes the form of Spanish-language radio “novelas,” produced in 2008, touting food stamps. The USDA recently yanked the novelas from its website after word spread about the brazenness of their something-for-nothing philosophy. (, which called attention to the campaign, has links to English translations.)

The episodes suggest that it’s almost impossible to eat healthy meals without relying on food stamps — or, these days, an electronic food-subsidy card — and that even if one’s husband is employed, a dutiful wife and mother would be remiss to refrain from getting government subsidies also.

One episode features two friends pontificating about a third, delinquent Diana. It’s a snap that Diana should take advantage of SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). But she keeps saying stupid things about how she doesn’t “need help from anyone.” Diana is “always making up excuses not to apply for SNAP,” laments Claudia.

Oh Diana! Stop making excuses!

It’s quite a suspenseful series, because we are supposed to be on the edge of our seats wondering whether the torpidly recalcitrant Diana will ever learn to be just as dependent on government handouts as all the healthily-eating people. Of course, in the end, Diana has learned her lesson.

Or un-learned one.

This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.

  1. Drik says:

Such a grand concept except for the part about who the bill gets sent to. At this rate, it is onlhy a matter of time before the rest of the 7 billion people in the world decide that America is a pretty good deal and the that they need to get here too for the free food.
No point in worrying about collapsing our economy trying to pay all the bills Presbo is running up, because that is the goal. Or if not the goal, still the result, so the only people that really need to worry are the ones stupid enough to still be working( or working for anything other than cash with no records).

  2. Jay says:

Drik, I agree. i also think that we should end a slew of other subsidies-and freebies–like ethanol ( which is pushing up food, prices–by forcing the use of corn in fuel); farm subsidies-when Bush vetoed his last farm bill, Hillary, Obama , and the rest of the D’s running (during the 2008 primary season) to find a “family” farmer-even if he/she was a part time farmer, to show the need for the subsidies.

And, on a semi-related topic–why can’t people in prisons be forced to work? rather then spending their time in gyms; libraries (filing lawsuits and appeals-often frivolus), etc.

  3. Brian Wright says:

An unfortunate acronym SNAP, which I use antipodally in the form of SNaP to mean the Sacred Nonaggression Principle ( Actually, I had no idea this sort of thing was going on; it will end badly… and hopefully soon.

  4. Ruth Bennett says:

On one hand the Government is urging people to take free food handouts while another department is urging us not to feed the wildlife for fear it will become dependent. sigh….
