Congo-Brazzaville’s president, Denis Sassou Nguesso, is quite the statesman.

He’s actually done what many an illustrious American pol with an obsession about “campaign finance” would merely like to do, but cannot (that darn First Amendment!): prohibited all talk about politics prior to the next election.

Indeed, the government has shut down the Internet and cellular SMS services, simply to prevent undue influence prior to the upcoming votes. Democracy requires a veil of ignorance, we’re told, and Nguesso’s taken that august philosophical scheme to its logical conclusion: no information running through the information superhighway of the modern age . . . at gunpoint.

And like many a long-term American insider, he’s balking at term limits, too. He has served his legally limited two terms. So he and his fellow statesmen put a referendum onto the upcoming ballot to overthrow them.

Just so he can serve longer.

Think of the sacrifice! He really must be looking out for his earnest and ardent supporters.

But he didn’t stop there. To fulfill his mandate, and continue in office, he has to entreat the people to overturn Congo’s mandated retirement age. At 71, he’s now too old to legally run, even if he were a first-termer.

Trifecta! — a pol so insistent at continuing his life of never-ending public service that he fights against ageism, term limits, and the corrupting influence of free speech!

I’m sure he has many, many secret sympathizers in our Congress, and in the legislatures of our several states.

This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.

  3. Good morning Sir,

Peace and blessings be upon you and yours,

First  of all ,  as a Congolese I would like to thank  you for taking your time to  speak out on what is happening in my country, the Rep of Congo.

What is happening is a great cause of concern as this could lead to chaos.

You summarised well the roots of the issues and there is no need to come back to it. Still it worth to stress that one man, Mr Sassou Nguesso,  72 years old, the age many of us would say the age of wisdom but sadly it  is not the case for  this STRONG man whose aim is to die as tyrant and potentially transfer power to one of his siblings.

For almost a week now the situation is Congo has become very alarming as the people of Congo lead by opposition leaders and civil society groups called  for  Civil Disobedienceagainst Mr Nguesso’ anti-constitutional and illegal reforms that was rightly qualified as a constitutional coup.

Sassou militia backed by some foreign mercenaries from Burundi (according to various witness) are preventing the people to express their rights,  they are  killing, kidnapping and proceeding to unlawful arrests. ( we can provide footage, pictures of casualties and police /army firing with live bullets..)

The whole population is  in fears of reappraisals and opposition leaders, such as Parfait Kolelas, Okombi Salissa are under house arrests while Mr Tsaty Mabiala whereabouts are unknown.

So far, only your country,  the USA have expressed sympathy and displayed strong leadership by asking Mr Sassou to withdraw his divisive and highly controversial project. But it is urgent to  change the tone as things are getting worse and the country is again on the brink of chaos and civil war.

Mr Saassou must withdraw his project to change the constitution as this is deemed illegal. Our 2002 constitution does not give him ground to proceed nor to organise any king of referendum with the aim to change the fundamental law.

Sir, people are dying in Congo as Mr Nguesso is about to “putsch” for another terms in power. We need your help, Congo need strong institutions, not a strong man.

    Kindest regards,

    God bless,

    Bishop Lyonel Tchifounga

Wow, he has missed his second calling and opportunity, he should let it go and had more lucrative second carrier on K Street as a strategy consultant.

  6. Brian Richard Allen says:

    Another darned African Big Man?

Who the Heck does he feel he is?

    Buraq bin Hussein?

  7. Le Pape says:

It’s sad to notice that western leasers are accomplices for the damages this guy causes to his people. And it’s sad to notice that, the so-called DEMOCRACY America wants to export is just a hoax. They ‘americans) fight for their interest but not for the good of those people who really need help. Sassou Nguesso has massacred more than 700.000 of people from southern Congo, between 1998 and 2003, and is still killing while western countries continue having trade with that country, the 4th oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa, but where more than 70% of the population lives below the threshold of pauvrety. America has a 300-strong marine commando a few miles from the country; We demand the Obama administration to bomb and dismiss this evil regime.

  8. voiceless says:

We desperately seeking for help. I am from Congo-Brazzavile. We need to get rid of this man. I know the worst has to come. He is planning to finish the genocide, he started 16 years ago. Where to go for help. This Man is evil. Help
