Roger Williams

Sharing

On October 9, 1635, Protestant theologian Roger Williams was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony as a religious dissident after he spoke out against punishments for religious offenses and giving away Native American land. He moved south, founding Providence Plantations, where he worked for separation of church and state, the rights of aboriginal Americans, and against slavery.

Williams was probably right about much of the mistreatment of the native pagan tribes. Fair is fair as to correct Christian behavior towards mankind, but aside from that Williams was not a force for biblical obedience according to God’s commands. He was a hermeneutical renegade who wanted to make up the rules as he went along. Same for Anne Hutchinson. Williams is treated as a hero in most history books, but only because most 20th and 21st century history books are decidedly anti-Christian and anti-God.
