Eleven/Eleven/Eleven

On November 11, 1889, the State of Washington was admitted as the 42nd State of the United States.

In 1918, German officials signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car in the forest of Compiègne, France. The fighting officially ended at 11:00 a.m. — the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The war officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.

In 1921 on this date, U.S. President Warren G. Harding dedicated the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

There was an “moral-emotional-spiritual” basis for the 11/11/11 time decision. Without looking it up in review, I believe it goes back to Roman Catholicism’s ancient “start time” for the season of Lent which they make a big deal of in Europe. In Germany it’s “Fasching” or “Karneval,” a season lasting a month or two – depending on the calendar – before the 40 days of Lent, dedicated to ribald celebrations, drinking, dancing, cheating and all that…in preparation for the 40 days before Easter when all of that side of life “came to an end.” The only sign of it in the U.S. is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. In Brazil it’s Carnival. Maybe the treaty-signers thought that by picking tri-eleven they would be bringing/invoking God’s favor on would be whatever after math of WW I. Too bad they didn’t know that God isn’t a Roman Catholic.
